Victoria
Whether you are visiting British Columbia or Washington, we recommend making a weekend trip to Victoria! This island off the coast of Canada is known as the "city of gardens" for good reason.
We take the Victoria Clipper up from downtown Seattle and take advantage of the Clipper Vacation packages that include one night in a hotel. Check them out at clippervacations.com.
#1 Butchart Gardens
Both times we have been to Victoria we have booked the tour bus that picks up from the Victoria Clipper terminal and includes entry to Butchart Gardens. The gardens include multiple experiences like the Japanese Garden, Italian Garden, roses from around the world, fountains, a restaurant and a firework show in the summer! Don't miss it!
#2 British Columbia Parliament
The Canadian government is fascinating and you can tour the Parliament building. Check the government website (https://www.parliament.vic.gov.au/visit/public-tours) for tour times because they change or can be at inconsistent times.
#3 Tea at the Empress Hotel
Afternoon tea at the Empress Hotel is exactly what we imagine British royal tea looks like. Make a reservation in advance and see it for yourself! Fun fact: the china at the Empress was first used for a royal visit by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth!
#4 Take the H2O Water Taxi
Are these not the cutest water taxis you have ever seen? Head over to any water taxi pick up spot and ride through the harbor to different parts of town!
#5 Have the World's Best Dessert: Nanaimo Bar
Kelsey's Dad was born in Vancouver area, so she grew up with Nanaimo Bar, a popular Canadian dessert, for special occasions. You can find it in grocery stores or cafes, but when you spot Nanaimo bar be sure to try it! The base is a graham cracker/ chocolate/ coconut mix, followed by a layer of custard and a top layer of hardened chocolate. Enjoy!
Safe Travels!
